Melissa Gould will present Options for Nondestructive In-Situ Determination of Pipe Properties as a webinar on Jan 13, 2021, at 9 a.m. CST
Early bird pricing through 12/15/21 (market price $300)

Course Description

Pipeline records are sometimes incomplete. Manufacturer test reports may be present for most of the pipeline components, but it is not uncommon for excavations to reveal a segment of pipe that appears to be different from adjoining pipe or that is inconsistent with the records. Determining the mechanical properties is key. The technologies for estimating or confirming mechanical properties continue to evolve, providing pipeline operators with options for measuring properties non-destructively in the field.

This three-hour webinar will introduce participants to the various methods, ranging from simple to complex and from easy “do-it-yourself” options to more technically sophisticated methods normally provided via service providers.  Nondestructive measurement of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, toughness, and chemical composition will be discussed.  Participants will learn how measurements of hardness, steel composition, and microstructural features can be used alone or in combination with various algorithms to estimate those properties.  Participants will also be introduced to test methods that more directly provide estimates of strength, such as instrumented indentation techniques and other proprietary methods. Methods that provide “lower bound” estimates of properties versus methods that provide estimates of the actual properties will be compared.  This webinar will also provide guidance on where participants can get additional information for more detailed study.

Feedback

“Great understanding of the material.  Also a good basic resource for the tools and methodologies of gathering pipeline material properties.”
“Very well presented material, well organized.”
“Enjoyed the presentation, technical details, and valuable information shared about the various studies done to validate test methods.”
“Great job.”
“Well-organized presentation and a lot of great information in a relatively short amount of time.”
“Great Course!”
“One of the best presentations I’ve attended! Enough info to understand the different inspection methods, good background on what to require from labs, and a list of contacts for future use.”
“Yes, I was more than satisfied with the webinar…in fact, I think it was one of my favorites this year. Melissa gave us enough information to understand what we need to ask for in the field…”
“The resources handout is worth more than the cost of the seminar.”

Instructor Bio

Melissa Gould, Senior Engineer, Welding Technology, Pipeline Services

Melissa Gould earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Welding Engineering from the Ohio State University prior to joining DNV in 2009. Ms. Gould focuses on welding consulting and management systems for onshore oil and gas pipelines, including both new construction and repair of existing lines.  She assists clients with the development of in-service welding plans, collection of pipe property data, and the review and development of welding and repair programs.  She has also been involved with asset integrity management of offshore platforms. Ms. Gould was the project manager for a research project co-funded by DNV and the Department of Transportation (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) for the development of a quality management system (QMS) framework for onshore pipeline construction. Ms. Gould is active with the American Petroleum Institute (API) including being the Secretary for the API Standard 1104, Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities, committee and involved in the task group which developed API RP 1177, Recommended Practice for Steel Pipeline Construction Quality Management Systems.
